FAQs
Where is the Virginia Creeper Trail reconstruction taking place?
Reconstruction applies only to the 18-mile section of the trail managed by the U.S. Forest Service, between Damascus and the North Carolina state line. This is the portion that experienced significant storm damage during Hurricane Helene.
Is the entire trail affected?
No. The full trail is 34 miles long, but the reconstruction effort is limited to the 18-mile National Forest segment. The Abingdon-to-Damascus section remains open where conditions allow.
Why is the trail closed?
The U.S. Forest Service has issued a closure order due to damaged trestles, unstable slopes, debris and planned construction activity. These conditions make the area unsafe for public use.
What was damaged during the storm?
Hurricane Helene caused extensive impacts along the corridor, including:
- 18 of 33 trestles destroyed or displaced
- Damage to remaining trestles
- 17 slope failures
- Washouts and erosion of the trail bed
- Significant debris throughout the corridor
These conditions prevent safe public access and require full reconstruction.
What work will be completed during reconstruction?
Reconstruction activities will include:
- Replacing destroyed trestles
- Repairing remaining structures
- Stabilizing slope failures
- Restoring the trail bed and drainage
- Removing storm-related debris
- Repairs to facilities at Straight Branch, Creek Junction, Whitetop Station and Green Cove Station
Specific construction activities will vary by location.
Will the trail look the same when it reopens?
The goal is to restore safe, durable access consistent with Forest Service standards. Some structures may differ from original trestles due to changes in terrain, engineering requirements and site conditions.
How can the public stay updated?
Updates will be posted on the Construction Progress page. The News page will feature official announcements, project updates and community highlights.
